Steve Yzerman and Red Berenson are Lester Patrick worthy

Area sports in brief

George Sipple from the Freep reports that the former Red Wings captain and the current Michigan Hockey head coach will be recipients of the Lester Patrick trophy. The trophy is awarded to those who have helped contribute to hockey in the United States.
Steve Yzerman obviously was the centerpiece of the resurgent Red Wings franchise that rebounded from being one of the worst teams in the league in the early 1980s to winning three Stanley Cups and being consistently one of the best teams in the league during the regular season over the past dozen or so seasons.

Red was also responsible for re-establishing a dominant program that had fallen on hard times. Berenson returned his alma mater to college hockey relevance by winning two national championships and making it a consistent presence in the NCAA tournament and the Frozen Four. He also played for the St. Louis Blues as a player, making it to the Stanley Cup Finals three times. He also once scored 6 goals in a game.
