Detroit 3, Chicago 2

Living in a backwater hockey town, my access to the game via Center Ice was blacked out. I would have gone to the game but didn’t leave work until 7pm. So I won’t comment too much other than some basic thoughts along with quotes from various reports on the game.

The hits keep on coming. Tomas Kopecky broke his collarbone and is out 2 to 3 months. Johan Franzen just came back from injury and played on a line with Valtteri Filppula and Tomas Holmstrom. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hudler went back on that line and Franzen took Kopecky’s spot on Kris Draper’s line. I think a line of Draper, the Mule and Kirk Maltby would be a pretty solid checking line.

The top two lines continued to produce, which is a good sign. The top line featuring Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Mikael Samuelsson scored 2 goals and had 1 assist. Robert Lang’s line scored 1 goal and had 1 assist. Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary both scored goals and Mikael Samuelsson scored the game winner. As a result, Cleary was the first star of the game and Samuelsson was the third star. Detroit also went 1-3 on the power play, so the man advantage is actually an advantage of late.

Dominik Hasek apparently kept the Wings in the game, which is a big part of why he was such a key acquisition this offseason. He stopped 29 of 31 shots for a .935 save percentage. This quote from Dom is from Helen St. James’ Freep article:

“Close games, if you can win them, it helps your confidence,” Dominik Hasek said. “Two-one, three-two, these are the games you need to win; in the playoffs, it’s like that.”

Now if only Robert Lang would stop making really bad turnovers that result in odd man rushes.
