Michigan preparing for Rose Bowl
Jo-Ann Barnas reports on Michigan football’s preparation for the Rose Bowl. The team began practicing last week and will head out to Los Angeles on Friday. This is a good article that covers a lot of different stuff, from bowl practices to Carr’s reflections on his friendship with Bo Schembechler to a conversation he had with actor Russell Crowe.
So Carr walked into his office one day a few weeks ago and passed the football executive assistant. Nothing unusual about that, except on this day she said: “Oh, and Russell Crowe is going to be calling you.”
“Oh, sure,” he replied.
Sure enough, Carr’s phone rang. Crowe was on the line.
“We had a great conversation,” Carr said Thursday. “We talked for 20 minutes. Of course, when he called, I was not expecting a call from Russell Crowe. I told him how much I enjoyed the film, and he did say that it was one of the great experiences he had and he loved the movie.
Michigan has a chance to do what two other teams who were shut out of the BCS championship game went on to do. Jim Carty and Angelique Chengelis focused on how winning the Rose Bowl could lead to a top pre-season ranking next year. Following the 2000 season the Miami Hurricanes were shut out of the BCS championship game. They went on that year to soundly beat the Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl before going on to win the BCS championship the following year. Following the 2003 season the USC Trojans were shut out of the BCS championship game. They beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl following that season before going on to with the BCS championship game for the 2004 season.
