The Freep tracks Red Wings Prospects

Last night proved how important developing your own prospects can be when Pavel Datsyuk (6th round pick) and Jiri Hudler (2nd round) scored both goals for the Red Wings. George Sipple over at the Freep developed his list of the top prospects in the Red Wings system. The other day I pointed out Red Wings Central’s list of the top players so let’s compare them, shall we?

I am leaving off players who currently play for the Wings since none of those players are on the Free Press list.

There seems to be some consensus near the top of the list which makes sense. Jimmy Howard could make the team next year and should be firmly entrenched in Detroit starting in 2008. If Igor Grigorenko ever plays for the Wings it will likely be next year. Jakub Kindl has performed well when he has played with the Wings so he could join the team in the next year or two. Beyond that the players are probably more than 2 years away from contributing in Detroit, making it more difficult to assess their potential.

UPDATE:
Red Wings Central, not to be outdone, has released an updated prospect ranking. This throws the entire chart into mass chaos. That doesn’t explain the lame formatting on my part, but that is my excuse. Here is the new, updated chart:

We are seeing some strong consensus, probably because both reporters are talking to the same people. Jimmy Howard and Jakub Kindl are the top prospects right now. Emmerton, Mursak and Grigorenko all makeup the next three spots in both reports. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Howard, Kindl and Grigorenko all make serious runs at making the Red Wings roster next season.
