Steve Yzerman to Manage Team Canada in ‘07 World Championships

Bob McKenzie at TSN writes that Steve Yzerman is expected to be announced as general manager for team Canada within one to two weeks. He would specifically manage the team for the 2007 World Championship tournament that will take place in Russia.

The recently-retired superstar, who is now a vice-president with the Detroit Red Wings, has had several conversations about the job with Hockey Canada President Bob Nicholson. Hockey Canada wants Yzerman to do it. Yzerman, by all accounts, is extremely keen and when he returns from a ski vacation in Colorado, he and Nicholson are expected to nail down the final details and make it official.

Dave Waddell at the Windsor Star confirms this report this morning. General manager Ken Holland has some great quotes and insight into how his and Jim Nill’s involvement with team Canada helped them in their capacity with the Red Wings:

“[Working on team Canada was] the first time I’ve got to represent my country, so I took great pride in that,” Holland said.

“From the Detroit Red Wings standpoint, it was a very useful experience. “Jim and I have been involved with Team Canada the past four years and from that we’ve got a lot of in-depth information on players we never would’ve got.

If all goes well it could result in an extended run for Yzerman with team Canada. This is an excellent opportunity for him to gain direct management experience while he continues his “education” working alongside Ken Holland, Jim Nill, Jimmy Devellano and the rest of the Red Wings staff. Congratulations to the former captain!
