Carr Contract Update
Lloyd Carr is signed through this upcoming 2007 football season. It has led to some speculation on whether next season will be his last. John Heuser from MLIVE reports that the contract has been altered regarding how the compensation is awarded.
Signed by Carr on Dec. 21 of last year, the addendum calls for the school to set up a deferred compensation account worth $300,000 within 15 days of July 1, 2007. Carr will collect his money approximately a year later if he remains employed by Michigan “in any capacity, until July 1, 2008.'’
According to the terms of Carr’s contract, he will be appointed an associate athletic director at the university and draw his base salary when he retires as coach.
Heuser reports that Carr’s previous compensation addendums required him to still hold the title of head football coach in order to receive the deferred money. University of Michigan Athletic Director Bill Martin said the change was made to provide Carr and the university with flexibility, but it has to be viewed as another sign next season will be Carr’s last. If he wasn’t planning on retiring he would have to address his future with recruits, who will rightly want to know if he will be their coach if they play for the Wolverines.
This is simply another of the many joys of life on the recruiting trail: Joe Paterno can use Carr’s contract status as a recruiting tool to question whether Carr will coach the Wolverines beyond 2007.
