Mike Babcock knows the Rules
This Free Press article from Carlos Monarrez has some funny quotes from Mike Babcock. The coach is usually good for offering up blunt opinions and straight talk. But he also has his Sparky Anderson or even Jacques Demers moments.
First, here is a quote on the question of who will start in net today:
“Someone’s got to play, though. I know that’s the rules. You’ve got to have a goalie.”
You have to love that about a coach. He knows the rules. He was also evasive about Chris Osgood’s injured finger:
“It’s a long way from his heart,” Babcock said of the injury. “What are you going to do? He was going to play.” Babcock was vague about which finger Osgood had broken. “It’s on his stick hand. That’s enough,” he said.
Osgood actually played a solid game on Friday night. If he did in fact play with a broken finger maybe he should play today as well. He seemed to play better than he did when he was fully healthy. Morarrez also reports that Jose Theodore will make his first start in net for Colorado in a month.
Matt over at On the Wings has his Gameday post up for the game.

Haha, I think the Detroit sportswriters love printing those kinds of comments from Babcock. Hard to believe he actually says things like that…
Yeah, I was mostly goofing around. I can imagine when you are being pressed on an issue you don’t want to talk about and have a bunch of microphones in your face you might struggle for the right words to come out. It was all in good fun!
[…] As I mentioned before, I love it that Mike Babcock reminds us that he knows the rules of the game. When the Wings had several goalies nursing injuries or battling the flu bug about a week ago, Babcock also mentioned that he knew he would have to start someone in net, as you cannot play without a goalie.
