Projections for 2007-08’s NHL Salary Cap
I am not familiar with the finer details of how the salary cap for the NHL gets determined. Apparently I am not the only one. Fortunately we have Larry Brooks, who’s job includes covering all of the details of the business side of the sport. He provides a good overview of where the dollar amount of the cap will likely end up.
Via Kuklas Korner:
If revenues are $2.3 billion this year…the cap should be no lower than $47.88 million. If the union exercises its right under Article 50.5 (b) (i) to a 5-percent bump, the 2007-08 cap would approach $50.27 million. Adopting a modest 3-percent bump would increase the cap to $49.3 million next season. That’s not a reach, and that’s not a money grab - that’s a number the players are entitled to under the CBA.
As Brooks points out, that is good for nearly everyone involved. On a side note, he mentions that if Detroit was able to acquire Peter Forsberg in a trade, they would likely turn around and flip Robert Lang to another team. He suggests the Rangers and that would make sense as the Blueshirts are in desperate need for a second-line center for Brendan Shanahan.
