The latest NHL Trade Talk
John Niyo of the Detroit News suggests in this article that Calgary’s recent trades could kick off trades for some of the bigger names believed to be on the market:
“Certainly that was a move that maybe gets things rolling,” Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “I talked to a number of teams today. It appears that maybe things are heating up out there.”
There are just over 2 weeks left in the trading deadline so trades are likely to begin in earnest. The big question is which players would be part of a deal for Detroit. Ken Holland didn’t sound particularly thrilled with the idea saying in the article that if this is what it would take to get a trade done “I guess that’s what we’d like to do”.
Ken Holland is getting lots of attention regarding what he plans to do. Ted Kulfan mentioned this in this article:
The cell phone rang and Ken Holland, talking with several reporters, stopped and instinctively looked down to see who was calling. “It’s my mom,” Holland said sheepishly. “She’s wondering who we’re going to get.”
In Kulfan’s article you get a better idea of the timeframe Holland is probably looking at for making a trade:
“Teams are falling, and as the games go by, they’re going to be sellers rather than buyers.”
…
“Nobody wants to bail out on the season,” Holland said. “You want to give your team every chance. I would suspect most trades would occur two to four days to the trade deadline, in that time frame.
Does that sound like a guy who is hot and heavy in the Peter Forsberg sweepstakes? Philly could have packed it in before the All Star game. Forsberg met with the team owner this weekend, presumably to give his consent to waive his no trade clause. Perhaps it would take nearly two weeks to hammer out a deal with the Flyers but I am not sure a deal is in the works.
