Price of Rental Players Going Up
Those are the words of Anaheim general manager Brian Burke and they are completely accurate. The first domino to fall was Shane Doan signing a new deal with Phoenix. That helped reduce the number of highly-coveted players available via trade. Then Nashville traded three first round picks (two players who were drafted in the first round and an actual first round pick) and a third round pick to acquire Peter Forsberg.
Nashville could afford to do that deal as they have plenty of solid prospects in their system. The Wings apparently made an offer but didn’t offer enough to move the deal in their favor. I’m fine with that. I would have been intrigued by the addition of Forsberg but I have had reservations, which I have written about in several recent posts. I can say I don’t think I’d want to see Detroit give up exactly what the Preds gave up to sign Forsberg. It’s a great move for them that they could afford to make.
Based on Damien Cox’s Toronto Star article it sounds like the bidding war will now ramp up for St. Louis forward Keith Tkachuk:
Burke is now expected to immediately turn his attention to St. Louis and forward Keith Tkachuk, who can play either centre or wing and, like Doan before he signed and Forsberg, is headed for unrestricted free agency this summer.
…
Out east, Carolina had been pitching for Forsberg, and now might turn their attention to Tkachuk.
Cox writes that Detroit was interested in Todd Bertuzzi prior to his setback in recovering from back surgery. If the Red Wings are still interested at least he probably wouldn’t cost much to acquire. But do you acquire a guy who hasn’t played a single game since mid October?
