Trade Bait
The rumor was that Detroit offered a first and a second round pick to acquire Peter Forsberg. Obviously that didn’t cut it for Foppa but it might be enough to pick up another top 6 forward. Ansar Khan at MLIVE suggests that is still a possibility for future trades and also opines on which prospects would probably be off-limits:
[Detroit will] be careful about mortgaging too much of their future, but they want to seize the opportunity that goaltender Dominik Hasek gives them. That’s why they’re prepared to overspend to acquire what they feel could be the final piece before the Feb. 27 trading deadline, whether it’s Bill Guerin, Keith Tkachuk, Todd Bertuzzi or someone else. It’s still highly unlikely the Wings would part with top prospect Jakub Kindl or Valtteri Filppula, but they’ll surely move their first- and possibly their second-round pick.
If Detroit is really offering up that much for a top 6 forward they will likely be able to acquire a pretty good player. We’re probably not talking Gary Roberts in return. That amount of talent should put them in the running for Bill Guerin. The general manager meetings are taking place in Florida over the next couple days, so if something is going to get done there is a good chance it will happen early this week.
