Joey Mac Placed on Waivers

The Detroit Free Press reports that third string netminder Joey MacDonald was placed on waivers today. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland indicated the move was made to get the netminder some playing time in the minors. If MacDonald is not claimed by tomorrow he could be re-assigned to either the Grand Rapids Griffins or possibly the Toledo Storm.

“Every goalie in our organization is healthy now, and Joey needs to play,” Holland said. “We know by putting him on waivers there is a risk he is claimed, but if he stays around here — we’re down to the month of March, and we have a lot of games. We don’t have a lot of practice time. When we do practice, Hasek takes one net and Osgood the other because he wants to be ready. Joey grabs 10 minutes at the end of practice.”

MacDonald’s salary really shouldn’t be an issue that would stop Detroit from acquiring one or two players. So he’s probably not being sent down to apply the $117,000 left in his salary to acquiring a player. The Red Wings have kept MacDonald on the roster in the event Chris Osgood needs to be replaced in a game. The reason was because Detroit didn’t want to risk having Dominik Hasek come into a game cold, which could increase his chance of being injured. The scenario of replacing Osgood with MacDonald took place once this season in an early season road game against San Jose.
