How much Cap Space do the Red Wings have?

As we head towards the trading deadline I decided to try and get a good idea of exactly how much cap space Detroit has. This website has a very thorough, and more importantly - consistently updated - snapshot of how much space each team has beneath the cap.

Here is what Detroit’s cap number looks like right now:

Projected final cap number: $43,930,008
Detroit’s cap space: $1,469,992

The cap is set at $44 million, so if you deduct Detroit’s projected final cap number from the cap max you come up with $69,992. Where does that extra $1.4 million Detroit supposedly has come into play? The website I linked to above indicates both Chris Chelios and Dominik Hasek have $1.4 million in performance bonuses they could earn this season. It has been rumored that one or both could defer this compensation until next season. This is what Steve Yzerman did last season and he actually accounts for a $400,000 cap hit this season.

So that is my guess on how it is that the Wings have just over $1.4 million in cap space. It has been rumored that Detroit has close to $2 million in cap space, but I am not sure where that extra $0.5 million comes from. Perhaps the injury allowance from Jiri Fischer’s salary accounts for that extra space.

The $1.4 mil might be Fischer’s salary.
The NHLPA lists his salary at $1.444 million :

Thanks Sarah. If the Red Wings were able to replace Fischer’s entire salary then that would explain the additional cap space.
