Red Wings Acquire Kyle Calder
I just heard about this trade during the Montreal-Toronto game. It is reasonable in terms of cost as the Wings will part with Jason Williams to acquire Kyle Calder. This is what I had to say about Calder when I looked at what Philadelphia has to offer in the way of top 6 forwads:
There has been talk that Philadelphia might try to trade Kyle Calder as he will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. He has scored 20+ goals twice in his career, but he has also been a really bad +/- player during the bulk of his NHL career. He simply doesn’t impress me enough to really give up much in the way of assets to acquire him. He probably has more offensive talent than Jason Williams but is a liability on defense. I just think Detroit can do better.
Well, the Wings need offense and Calder probably is a better offensive threat than Williams. They also didn’t have to give up much to get him. So you can say this move should improve their offense. Bruce MacLeod of the Macomb Daily spoke with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland this evening and here is a quote he posted over at Red Wings Central [last post on the 5th page]:
“It was a tough deal to make because Willie was a real good player for us last year,” said Detroit general manager Ken Holland. “Kyle Calder had a great year a year ago with Chicago. He was having a tough year in Philadelphia. The thing we like about Calder … Jason (Williams) has more speed and skill … Calder is a different player. He’s gritty. He forechecks. He’s on the puck. He goes to the corners. He goes to the front of the net. We think Calder can help us out.”
Helen St. James reports that Calder will play on the second line. Henrik Zetterberg will not play tomorrow night as he has a case of back spasms and will stay in Detroit. As a result Matt Hussey was called up from Grand Rapids.
I hope Detroit is seroiusly working to make at least one more deal. Bill Guerin is still with St. Louis and it looks like the Islanders just might trade Jason Blake by tomorrow afternoon.
