Calder goes up against his former team tonight
Matt over at On the Wings has his Gameday post up. The Free Press reports that Red Wings scout Mark Howe lives in the Philadelphia area and was impressed with Calder’s play on a bad Flyers team. His input played a key role in making the trade to acquire Calder.
In the Free Press article I linked above the Wings acknowledged they need to get better wingers on the Robert Lang line to get it back on track:
“We know how good a player Robert is, and good players need to be with good players,” Babcock said. “Robert is a dominant guy when he gets the puck down low. We feel that’s one of his best assets, and Kyle supports that style of play. Those two and the Mule give us three guys who can control the puck and cycle the puck in the offensive zone and ideally create some offense for us. That’s what you need at playoff time, when the goals become harder to come by.”
That was my general take in my last set of grades for the team. Lang has taken a beating amongst the fanbase of late but I think he will show improvement if he is lined up with solid players. This guy was amongst the league leaders in scoring a couple years ago and I think he will regain his scoring touch if he is lined up with offensive threats on the wing.
Here is how the top two lines are expected to look according to the Freep article:
Filppula - Datsyuk - Holmstrom
Franzen - Lang - Calder
