Babs’ quick ascent to win #100
Ansar Khan over at MLIVE mentioned that Mike Babcock reached his 100th career win with one team faster than all but one coach in NHL history.
Babcock became the second-fastest coach in NHL history to record 100 wins with one particular team, needing 149 games to accomplish the feat, 10 more than Tom Johnson needed to reach the milestone with Boston in the early ’70s.
That’s a pretty impressive feat, especially considering he has only coached the Wings since the hard salary cap was put into place. He’s not coaching a team that can trade away draft picks and then fill key areas of need via free agency. But Babcock played down the milestone in this article:
“When you get to 800 or 900 (wins) then you can start talking about it; in the meantime, it’s not much,” Babcock said. “But, 200 goals for [defenseman Mathieu Schneider], that’s a ton of goals. That’s how good this guy has been. He’s just a few assists away from getting a career high, that’s amazing for the amount of games he’s missed. Some guys are like fine wine, they get better with age.”
It’s good to hear that Babcock has high goals for himself. Schneider has been an excellent offensive defenseman. Khan mentioned that Schneider has been unstoppable lately, scoring 12 points over the last 11 games, with six multi-point games during that stretch. I’m a little concerned about his penchant for turning the puck over and giving up odd man rushes, which happened in the loss to Colorado. But overall Schneider has done very well in Detroit.
Another funny quote comes from Khan’s article where Mike Babcock gave a succinct job description for a banger:
“Get the puck out of your zone, get the puck in their zone, run somebody, get off the ice fast. Then do it again.”
That explains why Darryl Bootland played more than 9 minutes last night.
