Wings vs. Kings
Nashville spanked Calgary last night, so the Preds hold a three point lead over Detroit in the standings. The Wings have two games in hand, so they still have a decent shot of catching Nashville for the top spot in the division and conference.
Los Angeles is battling injuries so they will be without two of their best defensemen. Speaking of the Kings, their fans are eagerly anticipating the arrival of University of Michigan defenseman Jack Johnson. Here is the actual thread. These pictures are hilarious.

Matt over at On the Wings looks at the eventual lineups when the team gets close to full strength. Mike Babcock likes two of the recent additions to his team. One is a fairly new player in Darryl Bootland who was called up from Grand Rapids; the other is Mikael Samuelsson, who has been out seven weeks with a broken foot.
Here is what Babcock had to say about Samuelsson in this MLIVE article: “He can shoot the puck a ton,” Babcock said. “We need more shooters. We got a whole bunch of guys that like those cute plays; we need more shooting and going to the net, and he can do that.”
Samuelsson definitely is not shy about shooting the puck. At one point in early January before he was injured he was on pace to score 25 goals. But I don’t remember him going to the net much, even though he does have decent size. He seems to stay on the perimeter and release he shot from there. Hopefully Babcock is talking about how he has played in practice since coming back from injury.
Regarding Bootland, the quote that is appearing in many articles is this one: “He didn’t disappear when the banging got going. He was involved in it and went to the net and stayed there.” I don’t think Booter is going to be the fighter many people anticipate, but he does play what the Wings term a “greasy” game so it will be interesting to see how he does this time around in Detroit. Babcock definitely appreciates the aspects Bootland can bring to the team and he seems to have warmed somewhat to the way the forward played against Nashville.
Red Wings Central has their Game thread up as does Let’s Go Wings. Bruce MacLeod of the Macomb Daily reports that Dominik Hasek will start tonight so long as the morning skate goes well. He also reports that the decision on whether or not Hasek will play in back to back games next Tuesday and Wednesday will depend on how he looks prior to those games.
It is also being reported that Matt Ellis has become a father. Congrats to him and his family. Christy over at Behind the Jersey posted a couple questions from a recent interview she did with Jim Nill. She said she might post more of the interview in the future, so keep an eye out for that.
Finally, here is the video of Chris Simon’s double-fisted cross-check on Ryan Hollweg.

Simon whacks the guy right in the face and will hopefully get a long suspension for his antics. Chris Simon Darryl Bootland Dominik Hasek Los Angeles Kings Mikael Samuelsson Red Wings Ryan Hollweg
