Reaction to Last Night’s Game

Matt over at On the Wings has his post up on the game last night. As Matt points out Jordin Tootoo is quickly becoming a player Wings fans love to hate:

Not long after the goal, Jordin Tootoo showed up on the radar. He started taking runs at the Wings in their zone, but ended up getting knocked on his can by Brett Lebda at one point. Still, he was able to get in a big hit or two, the most noticeable being a high elbow shot to Mathieu Schneider’s head. No call.

Tootoo also left his feet when he tried to deliver a check on Mathieu Schneider. Fortunately Schneider had his head up and avoided the check. But Tootoo just have been penalized for leaving his feet. Does anyone think the officials would have made the call if he would have hit Schneider and given him a concussion? It’s yet another example of the NHL making sure they call every little potential penalty but miss out on the penalties that have the potential to cause serious injuries.

Gloveside has their haiku up following the game last night - but no updated Catch the Kitty graphic! Hopefully they’ll have one tomorrow that shows the Wings atop the conference.

Bill over at Abel to Yzerman is concerned that there have been no updates on Henrik Zetterber’s return to the lineup:

Well, [Ansar] Khan(!) addresses it this morning and it’s not looking good.

It’s been 16 days since Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg left the ice in practice complaining of back pain. He hasn’t skated since, but the club remains optimistic the star center will return before the end of the regular season.

“Anytime one of your best players is injured it’s a concern,” Wings general manager Ken Holland said Tuesday, before his team’s 5-2 victory in Nashville. “Our hope is to get him healthy and in our lineup for regular season games.”

Those of you who have followed the Holland-led Wings the last few years know exactly what Holland’s really saying there. “Hope to get him healthy for regular season games” actually means “I have no idea what the hell’s going on with Hank’s back. Our doctors don’t know. We don’t know when he’s coming back, if he needs surgery, if he’ll be available for the playoffs.”

I find it more than a little annoying that the league will whistle any ticky-tack hook no matter how minor, yet there was no whistle when Brad Stuart delivered a two-handed cross-check to Zetterberg’s lower back on February 11.
