Debate on the allure of the M Hoops Program

Is Michigan basketball a top 10 program or is it outside of the top 20? That seems to be the debate that was taking place yesterday. Nathan Fenno over at MLIVE spoke with Jay Bilas - who is good friends with Tommy Amaker - and Bilas had this to say:

“You wouldn’t put Michigan among the top 10 jobs in the country or even the top 20. But certainly it’s a good job.'’

Dan Wetzel, who writes for Yahoo Sports said that many coaches view the Michigan basketball program as a top ten program. I think that was true ten years ago but it is tough to really make that case right now. So I’d probably side with Bilas right now. But it’s also an argument that really is irrelevant.

The important thing - and it is not really arguable - is that the Michigan basketball job is the best job opening right now. That would change if Kentucky pressured Tubby Smith to resign, but until that happens Michigan is the top job opening. With Bill Martin making the decision shortly after the season ended to replace Amaker he has put the university in a great position to find the best candidate possible to fill the job opening.

The Free Press has some general quotes from athletic director Bill Martin on the characteristics he is seeking for the head coach. Brian over at MGoBlog has two good articles on coaching candidates.
