Former Wings coach Barry Smith tapped for U.S. Hockey

The U.S. Hockey website announced today that Barry Smith, who was an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings from 1993-2005, as an associate head coach for the U.S. Hockey team.

USA Hockey today announced its coaching staff for the 2007 U.S. Men’s National Team, including head coach Mike Sullivan, associate head coach Barry Smith and assistant coach David Quinn. Team USA will compete at the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship April 27-May 13 in Moscow, Russia.

U.S. Hockey will also utilize the services of three NHL general managers as Brian Burke, Dave Poile and Don Waddell will serve on the advisory board.

Smith has a decent amount of international experience. He coached the Malmo Redhawks in Sweden and was an assistant coach for Sweden’s team in the 1998 Olympic Games.

Speaking of former Red Wings coaches, Scotty Bowman has a blog on NBCsports.com. In his first blog entry he talks about the Eastern Conference playoff race. Next week he will talk about the Western Conference and about fighting.
