Blogger Commentary on Anaheim Game

Last night’s game had a slightly different feel to it - Detroit didn’t lose for the first time in four games and the crowd at Joe Louis Arena seemed pretty spirited. Here are what some other bloggers who follow the team had to say.

Both teams had eight penalties including a fighting major (Moen vs. Lilja) with neither team scoring a power play goal. Detroit outshot Anaheim, 28-25. Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek notched his seventh shutout this season after stopping all 25 shots tonight.

The ultimate “playoff preparation” moment? Pavel Datsyuk’s goal.

March 27, Orange County Register: “This was exactly like a playoff game,” Ducks right wing Teemu Selanne said after Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk scored the lone goal 4:50 into the second period. Datsyuk buried the rebound of a shot by defenseman Mathieu Schneider after winning an offensive-zone faceoff from Ducks center Andy McDonald.

“I told the team that it’s a post here, hit a shin pad there or lose a faceoff,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. “That’s what happens in these types of hockey games. It’s where a bounce goes your way, or a miscue can cost you a game. That’s what it’s going to be here down the stretch and into the playoffs.”

Gloveside also has a nice recap on the final games remaining in the regular season.

We meet the Preds on Thursday and the Stars on Friday, followed by home and home’s against the Blue Jackets and the Blackhawks…Nashville brings the Oilers home for a game on tuesday before the head-to-head w/hockeytown on Thursday. The Predators finish out the season with games against the Stars, Blackhawks, Blues and finish up with a game against the Avalanche.

I think the next two games will go a long way towards determining where Detroit finishes in the standings. Nashville and Dallas are obviously very good opponents. If the Wings lose both games then getting the #1 seed is all but out of the question. If they split or win both then their odds improve quite a bit.

I don’t think finishing first is hugely important but it is always nice to have home ice advantage. The Wings have been pretty tough at JLA this year. The other potentially interesting twist is that last game between Colorado and Nashville could determine whether Calgary or Colorado get that #8 seed. The Avs are currently 5 points behind the Flames.

If the playoffs started today, Detroit would have the 4 seed and would play Minnesota in the first round.
