The Hits (and breaks) keep on coming
< sarcasm >Great news…< /sarcasm >
via TSN:
Detroit defenceman Niklas Kronwall is expected to be out of the lineup six to eight weeks after breaking his sacrum Friday night in the Red Wings’ game against the Dallas Stars.
In case you are wondering what exactly a sacrum is, TSN reports it is a triangular bone near the end of the spine. Here is a picture:
The torn MCL’s connected to the broken leg, the broken leg’s connected to the broken sacrum
There was some grumbling about the long-term contract Kronwall was signed to during the season due to his injury history. I said that I understood it and thought it was warranted but I expected Kronner to get over his string of bad luck. So much for that. Kyle Quincey will be called up from Grand Rapids to fill Kronwall’s spot. Kyle Quincey Niklas Kronwall Red Wings

[…] Not only did we lose the game, but we also lost Niklas Kronwall in the first thirty seconds to a broken pelvic bone (Dave from gorilla crouch has a nice diagram if you want specifics…). He was against the boards behind the net fighting for the puck, and Joel Lundqvist barreled in and gave him one heck of a hip check into the boards. Unfortunately I have to say it was clean - I really wish I could blame him (or anyone for that matter…), it’d give me somewhere to direct the venting of my frustrations. […]
Thanks for the diagram Dave, I was wondering what in the world a sacrum was. Oh, and I always enjoy your captions.
Sarah,
I had the same thought so I went to the handy google image search and found that great diagram from McGill. I thought about going to Web MD to get a good diagnosis on how long it takes for a broken sacrum to heal but that would be too depressing. Kronner’s basically done for the season.
