John Beilein is on the clock
So says Mark Snyder and Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press:
ATLANTA — West Virginia coach John Beilein has an offer from Michigan athletic director Bill Martin to become Michigan’s next men’s basketball coach, according to three people close to the situation.
He is expected to make a decision in the next 24 hours.
B-line prepares to bogart the NIT Trophy
This fits squarely with what Rosenberg and MLIVE’s Jim Carty have been suggesting since Tommy Amaker was relieved of his duties as the head coach of the men’s basketball team. There should be an announcement of some sort by the time the National Championship game starts tomorrow night.
If Beilein accepts the position University of Michigan athletic director Bill Martin will be widely considered to have made a great hire for the coaching vacancy. The benefit of hiring Beilein would be that he has such an established record that Martin will be seen as having given the basketball program the best candidate in terms or track record while also filling the position with a coach who will not run afoul of the NCAA. The latter is of no small concern due to the Ed Martin scandal that decimated the program for the better part of a decade.
Bob Wojnowski over the Detroit News is also reporting that Beilein has been offered the job. He also suggests that Beilein is likely to accept the job offer:
U-M athletic director Bill Martin has targeted Beilein all along, and according to two sources, Beilein, 54, appears willing to accept the job.
