Playoff Pairing Updates

Detroit has the #2 seed in the West locked up. With either a Detroit win or an Anaheim loss Detroit will lock up the top spot in the conference.

If the Wings finish with the top spot they could still play either Calgary or Colorado. The Avs are within three points of the Flames with both teams having two games remaining. Calgary plays Edmonton on Saturday and that game will likely determine whether their final game of the season - against Colorado by the way - will be for the final playoff spot.

The Avalanche play Nashville on Saturday night, but the Preds don’t have much to play for as their playoff positioning is set: they’re locked into the #4 seed. So Colorado has a good chance in that game as they are fighting for their playoff lives. If they win that game and the Oil beat the Flames that would make the final game for each team a “play in” game for the #8 seed.

Wings fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the team will avoid the Sharks in the first round. The worst San Jose can finish as a seed is 6th. So there is no scenario that has Detroit playing them in the first round. Calgary would also be a tough matchup, so some fans are hoping Anaheim can pass Detroit for the top spot in the West. That would bump Detroit down to the #2 seed.

Who would the Wings play in that scenario? If the playoffs were to start today (and Anaheim somehow magically was the #1 seed), the Wings would play Minnesota. However the Wild are capable of passing Dallas and knocking the Stars down to the #7 seed. Right now most fans seem to like door #2 (seed) the best.

The top seed in the West will either be decided or get much more interesting tonight, as the Ducks play Dallas tonight. If Dallas wins Detroit is locked into the #1 spot. If the Ducks win it increases the chances of Detroit playing either Dallas or Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs.
