The Wings got a couple fortuitous bounces early to go up 2-0. That was with a little under fifteen minutes of the first period yet to be played. Detroit cruised to a 6-0 lead before Chicago got their first goal en route to a 7-2 victory. Detroit’s secondary tertiary scoring threats paced the team, with Mikael Samuelsson scoring two goals, Danny Markov potting a goal and Kyle Quincey registering his first NHL goal.

A couple of the usual suspects also got into the act with Tomas Holmstrom scoring a goal at the 3:51 mark of the second period and Kyle Calder potting a pair of goals. Chris Osgood stopped 19 of 21 shots and Radim Vrbata’s goal was the lone score that the Red Wings netminder would probably want another chance at stopping.

With absolutely nothing on the line Detroit came out and played the way you’d like to see them play come playoff time. Of course the Blackhawks will not be an opponent going forward, but Detroit scored from in close as well as from a couple bombs from their d-men. Markov opened the scoring when his shot from the right point deflected off a skate, hit the Little Caesar’s sign along the end boards, and then bounced off Patrick Lalime’s skate before going into the goal.

Kyle Quincey closed out the scoring for Detroit off a snapshot from back near the blueline that somehow got past Lalime, possibly by being deflected by traffic in front of the net. Quincey’s first goal of his NHL career came right after Vrbata’s goal drew Chicago to within 5 goals of the Wings.

In between the first and seventh goal, Tomas Holmstrom and Kyle Calder each scored a goal by doing what they do best: going to the front of the net. Homer received a nice pass from Johan Franzen at the 3:50 mark of the second period as he cut towards the net. He paid the price by getting knocked down as shot the puck past Lalime to give the Wings a 4-0 lead.

The goal was Holmstrom’s 30th of the year, his first 30 goal season in his NHL career. Calder took a pass from Samuelsson as he went in all alone on Lalime. He gave the netminder a nice little deke before roofing the puck to give Detroit a 5-0 lead at the 5:27 mark of the second period.

Mikael Samuelsson did most of the work on Calder’s first goal as his shot at the 11:30 mark of the first period went in off of Calder. But Samuelsson notched his second goal at the 12:30 mark of the second period to give Detroit a 6-0 lead.

Nicklas Lidstrom played for Detroit, but Todd Bertuzzi did not. Bruce MacLeod reports that Henrik Zetterberg should be good to go for the first game of the playoffs. It has also been reported Todd Bertuzzi should be expected to play in the first game of the playoffs.

In other action, Buffalo clinched the President’s Trophy with their win over Washington. Jack Johnson got into two fights in Los Angeles’ win over Phoenix. And Toronto and Montreal are playing right now in a game that will likely determine which team gets the #8 seed for the playoffs. The atmosphere is pretty crazy in the Air Canada Centre.
