Yzerman on the Red Wings

Mitch Albom over at the Free Press covered last night’s game and was able to get some quotes from the VP on how the team played.

“The younger guys are hardened now,” Yzerman said. “They know what to expect. They’re more comfortable in my absence or Brendan’s (Shanahan) absence. …

“They control the locker room now.”

Albom also has a nice bit on the former Captain at the end of the article. Yzerman once again repeats that he has no doubts he made the right decision as far as retiring.

“My urge to play is gone,” he said, smiling. “I miss the atmosphere and knowing what the guys are going through. But the playoffs don’t make me miss it. I have more than accepted that my playing career is over. And I don’t think for one minute that I could go out there and help.”

Steve Yzerman remarked during his retirement ceremony that he and Wings VP Jimmy Devellano talked after he was drafted about how many Stanley Cup championships they thought they could win in Detroit. Yzerman didn’t tell how many they hoped to win but said they didn’t win as many as they expected. Hopefully be will be able to help the team win future championships in a different role in Detroit.
