Pregame: Game 4 - Calgary v. Detroit

John Niyo of the Detroit News has another good article this morning. He writes on Detroit’s special teams woes and includes this candid assessment from Mike Babcock:

“They ended up with eight scoring chances on their power plays, and we ended up with one on ours,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “Any way you look at the specialty-team games, they won the battle.”

He also mentions how Detroit struggled to win faceoffs late in Game 3. Kris Draper has been the most effective player on draws, as he won 53% of the faceoffs he took in Tuesday’s game.

Matt over at On the Wings has his Gameday post up. He has some good keys to the game for the Wings. Here’s the big one for me:

60 minutes. The Wings had their moments in Game 3, but there were also stretches where they looked lost. They need to play hard for more of the game tonight, from start to finish.

Part of that is due to the Flames playing better on home ice. But the Wings could have built up a lead early and put Calgary in a difficult position. Say, for instance, Detroit scores with that 4:00 power play, do the Flames start to push and start squeezing their sticks a little? I stand by my opinion that Detroit played pretty well in Game 3. But if they make the most of their opportunities they are going to make it that much tougher for Calgary to win the game. So it is important for Detroit to make the most of opportunities like power plays and also limit the number of penalties they take.

Christy over at Behind the Jersey has a story on Bernie the Rally Bird. I’ll link to her story so you can get all the details, but Let’s Go Wings printed up some shirts and sent them to the team. It’s a great story.
