Detroit Sports fans have it Good

I was looking at some commentary from some other Detroit sports bloggers and came across a theme at two different blogs: Detroit sports fans have it good. I have to agree and yesterday was a perfect example.

First, let’s start with Big Al over at the Wayne Fontes Experience.

We bloggers do more than our fair share of bitching. But you have to admit, it’s pretty damn good being a fan of Detroit sports. when compared to most major league cities, we fans are spoiled rotten. Today is one example why.

To start the day, at 1pm we have the evil Chicago White Sox playing the Tigers in game 2 of an important early season series. It’s never to early to make a statement against one of your main rivals for a playoff spot.

Okay, the Sox have taken the first two games in the series. They also did that to the Tigers early last season too. Scott over at Quo Vadimus was at the game and has some thoughts on what the Tigers need to do to right the ship:

The Tigers are just not playing good baseball right now, and today’s game hit all of the negatives:

Defense: The Tigers had three very costly errors today, and while the team has only committed four errors on the season coming into this afternoon’s game, the way they played today wipes all of that out.

Offense: Craig Monroe, Brandon Inge, Sean Casey, and Gary Sheffield are all hitting under .200. That’s practically half the lineup. And Magglio Ordonez, despite a solo home run today, is getting close to the .200 level. That’s unacceptable. Sheffield has the support of Tigers fans now, but they won’t stick with him for long considering his huge contract and his lack of performance so far.

Bullpen: Todd Jones blew his first save of the season Wednesday, Joel Zumaya gave up a lead today, and Fernando Rodney has been horrendous all season, and already has four losses, which most relievers have as a season total.

Yeah, the bullpen has generally been a rollercoaster ride for Tigers fans. That isn’t likely to change anytime soon. The Pistons, as expected, beat the Orlando Magic in the opening game of their first round playoff matchup. The Pistons seemed to lose interest late which is something they have struggled with over the past two seasons.

But Big Al makes sure to point out that being a Detroit sports fan also means you have to take your lumps sometimes.

And to prove there is always a yin to the tang, a minus to the plus, to keep the universe in balance, there are the Detroit Lions. Get feeling too good about today, just think about the Lions for a few minutes. Even though they are not in season, just thinking about how they will blow their draft next weekend will bring you right back down to earth. The Lions keep we fans humble.

No doubt. My brother said that if the Lions end up taking Brady Quinn with the #2 pick [don’t laugh, Matt Millen is in charge of the draft] that he’d get a lobotomy. That’s about what it takes to follow the Detroit Lions. Speaking of lobotomies, Geico should change their campaign slogan to be “so easy even Matt Millen can do it”. Maybe Geico is setting the bar a little too high going with the whole cavemen angle.

And if winning teams in baseball, hockey, and basketball weren’t enough, Matt Millen gives fans each week a chance to say something people in other cities simply cannot say — “I could do better than that.”
