Rumors on other Red Wings injuries

Word made the rounds today that both Tomas Holmstrom and Brett Lebda will miss Game 1. Now there are rumors that Kyle Calder and Mikael Samuelsson are nursing hand or wrist injuries. The first report I saw was over at James Mirtle’s blog.

Columbus Blue Jackets broadcaster Jeff Rimer just reported on the Fan 590 here in Toronto that both Kyle Calder and Mikael Samuelsson are nursing a broken hand after their first-round series with the Flames.

John Niyo from the Detroit News has a similar report:

For what it’s worth, it looks like Calder might be the guy replacing Holmstrom on that top line. Samuelsson still skated with the fourth line, but he’d be an option, too. Both those guys are playing hurt (hand/wrist?), but both practiced today.

Bruce MacLeod from the Macomb Daily confirms that both players participated in practice today. Calder was with the top line and Samuelsson practiced with the fourth line. Calder on the top line would conform with what many people suspected when it was learned that Tomas Holmstrom was not likely to play in the first game in the series.

For whatever it’s worth, both players were playing shifts well past regulation play in Game 6 against Calgary. Neither player was a huge factor in the first round, although Samuelsson had a solid game in the 5th game against the Flames. Since they practiced today and John Niyo suggests they will play tomorrow night it looks like they will be in the lineup. We’ll just have to wait and see which lines they play on and how much ice time they get.

[…] Those reports that Mikael Samuelsson has a broken hand appear to be incorrect. Samuelsson was effective yesterday, as he skated for 15 shifts, generated 3 shots on goal, blocked 2 shots and had 2:28 of power play time. However Kyle Calder probably is injured, as Ansar Khan points out he had a team low 7:40. […]
