Red Wings updates following 3-2 win
Those reports that Mikael Samuelsson has a broken hand appear to be incorrect. Samuelsson was effective yesterday, as he skated for 15 shifts, generated 3 shots on goal, blocked 2 shots and had 2:28 of power play time. However Kyle Calder probably is injured, as Ansar Khan points out he had a team low 7:40 of ice time.
It has been reported Tomas Holmstrom will not be back until at least Game 4. So the Red Wings will have to do without him for at least one more game. Fortunately he has been able to skate and stay in shape. The prognosis for Brett Lebda doesn’t look as promising as most reports suggest Holmstrom is likely to return before Lebda does.
George Malik from Snapshots has several links to multimedia following yesterday’s game. The links include interviews with Detroit coach Mike Babcock, San Jose coach Ron Wilson, commentary from the NBC crew [including a funny comment from Brett Hull that Dominik Hasek should be tied to the goalpost] and intreviews with several Red Wings players. As usual George has done a great job assembling all of this content in one place.
Michael Rosenberg from the Freep has a good article on how Detroit is the underdog in this series despite being the #1 seed in the Western Conference.
I know: The Wings are the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. They came into this series with home-ice advantage. And they are the Red Wings. How can the Red Wings be the underdog? Was it an upset when King Kong beat Godzilla?
…
…they came back and gutted out a 3-2 win. It was far from a dominant performance, but the Wings probably won’t dominate a single game in this series. They aren’t that kind of team any more, and the Sharks are too good.Yet the Wings can win, and Saturday, they showed how.
Rosenberg points out if Detroit can win this series it will be the first time they have pulled off an upset in the playoffs since the Red Wings beat Colorado in the 1997 playoffs.
Matt over at On the Wings has pictures of his seats for the playoff games for a series Japer’s Rink is running where fans take pictures of where they watch the games. Christy at Behind the Jersey also contributed to the series. Christy also gives her thoughts on the game, including a sentiment I fully agree with: Tomas Holmstrom would be a great guy to have in the lineup to take advantage of those big rebounds Evgeni Nabakov is giving up.
