Darren Helm is the Real Deal

Red Wings recruit Darren Helm and his Medicine Hat Tigers teammates just lost the Memorial Cup in a hard-fought 7 game series. But in the Tigers’ playoff run he has won accolades and gives you reason to think he’s going to have a bright future in Detroit. Here are some articles on Helm.

Red Wings Central - Helm’s Season ends in Heartbreak

The 6-foot, 182-pound Helm scored Medicine Hat’s lone goal on the power play at 15:49 of the second period…Helm, an assistant captain for the Tigers, finished second in WHL playoff scoring, collecting 22 points in 23 games. He also won a gold medal with Team Canada at the world junior championship in Sweden in January.

The 20-year-old, known for his blazing speed, grit and two-way skills, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings in September and is expected to play in the American Hockey League next season.

James Mirtle - The Agony of Defeat

Helm, on the other hand, was composed in comparison, steely eyed and quiet as he fielded the largest group of reporters. The Detroit Red Wings’ prospect had had a terrific year, both during the season, at the world juniors and in the playoffs, but that was obviously of little consolation under the circumstances. He’s certainly not a big guy — listed at 6 feet, 180 pounds — but he plays big and was the best Medicine Hat skater on this night.

Helm is another late-round steal for the Wings, drafted in the fifth-round in 2005 the year before he exploded for 41 goals, and said he was planning on playing in that organization next season — whether it was in the NHL, AHL or wherever.

Canadian Press - Tigers’ Keetley takes loss hard

Helm, who missed [claiming] a Memorial Cup [championship and] world junior championship double, said the Tigers did more this season than most people thought, including beating the Giants in an epic WHL final that ended in double overtime.

“We’ve had a great season,” said Helm, a 2005 pick of the Detroit Red Wings. “It shows a lot of the character we have in that room (but Sunday) was one game and we couldn’t pull it off.”

Helm is the 8th rated prospect in the system according to Red Wings Central. He seems to be similar to Dan Cleary. They’re both 6 feet tall, have very good speed and are very sound two-way players. Cleary has at least 20 pounds on him so the thing Helm is going to have to do is add muscle and get stronger but without losing his blazing speed. Red Wings Central indicates he will play in Grand Rapids next season.

After leading Medicine Hat to the Memorial Cup final last season he centered the fourth line for Detroit during the playoffs. He put up 4 points and was +2 while helping the Red Wings roll four lines. […]
