Dom’s Decision Due Soon

Is Dom ready to sign on for another year?

The Free Press has talked to Red Wings general manager Ken Holland and he expects to hear back from Dominik Hasek on his plans for next year pretty soon.

“I talked earlier this week with Dom’s agent, and he said he’d let us know by the middle of the next week at the latest,” general manager Ken Holland said Wednesday. As for what that decision will be, “Dom keeps his cards close to his vest,” Holland said.

I think this is a good sign but we’ll know for sure in about a week or so. After Anaheim dispatched Ottawa in 5 games there is no question that Detroit gave the Ducks their toughest series. If Detroit isn’t missing two of their top 4 defensemen there’s a good shot the Wings win the Western Conference Finals. So bringing as much of the core back as you can afford is a good move, but it all has to start with Hasek.

Hopefully plans for next season can begin in earnest when Dom signs on for another year.

More Wings coverage. Pete at YiG takes a look at the defensemen. I disagree a little on his take regarding Nik Kronwall:

Certainly someone, whether its the captain, the Captain, or a member of the coaching staff, should try to work with Kronwall on taking his physical play down one, perhaps two notches.

Kronner’s injuries have nothing to do with physical play. The one that could be loosely tied to physical play - getting the tip of his nose nearly lopped off in a game against Colorado due to making a hip check - was just a freak play. The most recent injury was when he was being forechecked. However I agree with Pete completely that Kronner looks for the big hit way too often and it gets him out of position. So I say keep hitting but pick your spots. Be judicious but when you have a chance go out and knock the snot out of the opposing player.

Finally, Jeremiah at All Things Wings takes a look at Hockey’s Future’s article on the Red Wings European prospects. Daniel Larsson, who looks like he could be a good talent at goalie, and “Hat Trick” Dick Axelsson are the guys to watch.

Just to clarify on my post, I didn’t quite say what I meant to regarding Kronwall and the injuries. My guess is that it’s the extra wear his body takes from being very physical that helps him get injured, not that he’s necessarily getting hurt on hits he is making. But no doubt he’s also dealing with some seriously bad luck.

    Pete,

That’s a good point, and I think your comment regarding Markov makes some sense. I really think you need to have some players who are going to be physical and will dish out hits. But you need to pick your spots - that’s particularly true for Kronner.
