Cheli’s back…Hasek set to return next?
Dom and Cheli should be back defending the net next season
TSN is reporting that Chris Chelios has signed a new one-year deal to return to the Detroit Red Wings next season.
Detroit re-signed 45-year-old defenceman Chris Chelios to a one-year contract Tuesday, bringing the three-time Norris Trophy winner back for his 24th NHL season and ninth with the Red Wings.
Chelios, who said the deal will pay him US$850,000 plus incentive bonuses, can reach another milestone next spring.
In the article Chelios said he feels the team is in as good a position as any to win the Stanley Cup next season.
‘’We’re coming back with basically the same group of guys next year, we’ll be able to take a run at the Cup again and that’s what it’s all about and that’s what I’m looking forward to.'’
That comment, along with this article, seem to suggest an announcement that Dominik Hasek will return for another year is imminent.
Dominik Hasek’s agent Rich Winter confirmed Monday the Detroit Red Wings goaltender has made his decision about his future, but he wanted to inform the NHL team’s management first.
Winter, who was upbeat in discussing Hasek’s plans, hinted that the 42-year-old is coming back. Winter said he expected an announcement in the next day or two.
Once Hasek’s intentions are made official the next big signing for Red Wings general manager Ken Holland will be defenseman Mathieu Schneider, who is due to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st if he isn’t signed to a new deal. George Malik over at Snapshots includes a quote in this post from the Windsor Star that suggests Schneider could be in for a pay raise. He made $3.3 million per season over his last contract but Ken Holland suggested Detroit would be willing to go over that amount.
“…on the open market, he might get an offer of $5.25 million and that’s when our interest in a player becomes less.”
So while Holland mentioned that he hasn’t discussed salary numbers with Schneider’s agent yet, he does indicate that he’s willing to give the defenseman a nice raise. That’s probably why all reports coming out of Detroit have suggested the team probably will not re-sign Danny Markov.

[…] The interesting thing to follow will be whether Markov becomes more likely to sign due to Schneider’s salary demands. With Philadelphia signing Kimmo Timonen to a deal worth $6.3 million per year you can reasonably expect Schneider and his agent to push for a contract in excess of $5 million per year. Ken Holland said as much when he opined that Schneider becomes difficult to resign if his demands push $5.25 million per year. […]
