Matrix for Sheed?

Yahoo Sports has a blurb on a trade rumor between the Phoenix Suns and the Detroit Pistons. The rumor was originally published in this AZCentral.com article. Here are the basic details.

[Shawn] Marion’s name also has surfaced in trade rumors with the Detroit Pistons, who would send forward-center Rasheed Wallace to Phoenix.

In terms of salary, Marion makes about $3.6 million more per year than Sheed so the difference in salary would probably need to be worked out. But both contracts run for two more years so the term is exactly the same. On the surface this trade makes a lot of sense. The Suns play in the west where all of the dominant big men on the blocks roam: Tim Duncan, Yao Ming, Amare Stoudamire, Elton Brand, and Carlos Boozer. So having a great low-post defender in Sheed would help the Suns out quite a bit.

In the east there are some very good younger low-post players like Chris Bosh, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Dwight Howard, but by and large the best of the bigs are in the west. With that being the case Matrix could do a reasonably good job defending the post players in the east. He’d make the Pistons more athletic, and if Flip Saunders is really going to come back (sigh) Matrix would fit into the offense nicely. A lineup consisting of Chauncey Billups (assuming he re-ups), Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell (assuming he or Amir Johnson actually get PT) and Shawn Marion would be pretty decent. Sure, Maxiell and Marion would be undersized but that shouldn’t present huge problems in the east.

The biggest problem of course is that the Pistons would lose one of the best low-post defenders in the game if they let Sheed go. But is Shaq really going to ever play another full NBA season? It seems unlikely and the difference makers in the east seem to be perimeter players like D-Wade, LeBron and Agent Zero. So giving up a strength to gain a strength looks like a win-win for both teams in this scenario.
