Does the NHL really have a marketing department?
Sure outdoor hockey is wildly successful, but being successful just isn’t the NHL’s thing
Sometimes you just have to laugh at the NHL’s inability to play to its strengths. Outdoor hockey games have been wildly popular, and the league finally decided to play another NHL game outdoors only four years after the previous one set an NHL attendance record.
But the NHL clearly doesn’t like doing things that drive up interest or make the league appear to be successful. So they decided it would be a good idea to play the next outdoor hockey game on January 1st. New Year’s day is a great idea for the game to be played - if you want to have your sport marginalized even further given COLLEGE BOWL GAMES COMPLETELY DOMINATE THE SPORTS LANDSCAPE ON THAT DAY.
It appears [we should be so lucky] that the league doesn’t quite reach Matt Millen levels of incompetence. The league has decided that maybe rescheduling the game during a day when there won’t be as much competition might be a good idea. With that being the case it appears there might be a shot for the Red Wings to play in an outdoor game this season.
The league is believed to favor playing the game in Buffalo, against either the Penguins or Detroit Red Wings — two prominent U.S.-based clubs that are within reasonable driving distance of Buffalo.
Would anyone be shocked if the game ended up being scheduled on February 3rd?

Well, nothing surprises me when Gary Bettman is in there as commissioner. You can expect the worst decisions possible.
