Tigers and Pirates talking Trade?

Is Damaso Marte heading to Detroit?
Is Damaso Marte heading to Detroit?

That’s what Jon Paul Morosi suggests over at the Free Press. It would make sense as the Tigers acquired Sean Casey from Pittsburgh last season. Morosi suggests that the Bucs could help Detroit fill their need for a backup utility infielder and a relief pitcher.

The clubs have spoken in recent days – the respective general managers, Dave Dombrowski and Dave Littlefield, have a strong relationship – and there are plenty of reasons to believe a deal could happen, with Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson as the centerpiece.

Wilson wouldn’t have a starting job in Detroit – at least not right away – but he would satisfy the Tigers’ immediate need for an experienced middle infielder off the bench. He could fill in for Carlos Guillen or Placido Polanco if either were injured, and otherwise serve as a late-inning defensive substitute.

Any deal involving Wilson has the potential to expand, as the Pirates could send a veteran relief pitcher – such as Shawn Chacon, Damaso Marte or Salomon Torres – to Detroit.

Yesterday I mentioned Marte as being a good target for Detroit. He’d likely be a setup man for Todd Jones. So long as your starters put in the type of performance Jordan Tata put in last night and last 6-7 innings you put less pressure on a staff of middle relievers who have struggled lately. Having Marte and Jones, who would both be ideal one-inning pitchers who could pitch the 8th and 9th innings, would mean putting even less pressure on the middle relievers.

Hopefully this is a deal that gets done today. Both players would fill an important need.
