Commentary from the Pros

George Malik, who writes and compiles the MLIVE Snapshots blog posted his Red Wings preview over at Kukla’s Korner.

He provides a very comprehensive post on the expectations many in the media had for Detroit prior to last season and the makeup of this year’s team. I think he has an interesting take on the decision to put Kris Draper on Val Filppula’s wing.

I really like the concept of making Draper a winger for Filppula, because Fil still has a tendency to out-skate his wingers, and, sometimes, even himself, so Draper finally gives Fil someone who can keep up and provide a high-speed outlet. The entire line is extremely responsible defensively, they have a speedy transition game that the top two lines can’t keep up with…Cleary is what makes this line work, however, because he provides that net-front presence and sneaky snap shot that accentuates Filppula and Draper’s solid all-round game with some blue-collar offensive jam.

Bruce MacLeod from the Macomb Daily did a sort of live blog of last night’s exhibition game against the New York Rangers. He didn’t do the live blog from his excellent Red Wings Corner blog though - he did it in the Gameday Thread over at Red Wings Central. It’s definitely worth a read.

The good news is Igor Grigorenko is starting to show some signs of catching up to the NHL game. He took Dan Cleary’s spot on the third line and played well. When the Wings built up a large lead he was also put on the ice with Datsyuk.
