Washtenaw County Champs!!
I don’t have much time so I won’t do a full recap - just the coaching grades.
Mike DeBord: C. The offensive coordinator decided to use the pass to set up the run. He probably felt dirty doing so, but it softened up the tough as nails Eagles defense and allowed Michigan to run at will in the second half. Mike Hart set Michigan’s career rushing mark en route to rushing for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns. Henne wasn’t particularly impressive especially considering the quality of competition, completing 61.5% of his passes for 195 yards and throwing 1 TD and 2 INTs.
Ron English: C-. His defense struggled once again against a spread attack. But they made adjustments and shut down the Eagle offense in the second half until the game was well in hand. For the second straight game the defense forced multiple turnovers that gave the offense a short field. The performance against the Wildcats last weekend is slightly more impressive considering Northwestern is tearing through the MSU defense the way the Oregon Ducks tore through Michigan’s defense.
Lloyd Carr: C-. The team doesn’t have a special teams coach so the continued ineptitude of this unit needs to be laid at his feet. A blocked PAT that resulted in two points for EMU, an 86-yard kickoff return that resulted in a field goal, and an Eagle onside kick at the start of the third quarter that resulted in an eventual EMU touchdown showed this unit still isn’t ready for prime time. But the willingness to throw the ball at the start of the game to open up the run game was an improvement over the death march offense the team featured in the first half in Evanston last weekend.
