A few quick comments:
-It’s obvious the team is struggling to score at even-strength. Fortunately their top power play unit has been very reliable. By reuniting Datsyuk and Zetterberg on the top line even-strength scoring should improve.
-The kids are getting big minutes. Hudler and Filppula are both playing over 12 minutes a night. That’s a big change from last season when Filppula started to play bigger minutes late in the season and playoffs and Hudler was mostly getting scratched or playing limited minutes on the fourth line. We’re only three games in but they’re both being responsible players.
-He’s not technically a kid but Niklas Kronvall has looked solid thus far. He’s playing good minutes - over 15:00 per game - and has only been on the ice for one even-strength goal against.
-The Wings might need one more 4-6 D-man. Whether that player comes from Grand Rapids - which seems likely - or via trade - the player should be an offensive defenseman. I speculated they might bring Jonathan Ericsson up when Aaron Downey was waived but that obviously hasn’t happened.
The St. Louis Blues preview is up for the Central Division Preview. You can check it out here. I’ll give my thoughts after the Calgary game tonight.
