Tigers pay steep price to acquire Renteria

As has been widely reported, the Detroit Tigers traded Gorkys Hernandez and Jair Jurrjens to the Atlanta Braves for Edgar Renteria. The trade signals the Tigers feel their window is right now and that’s understandable with players like Kenny Rogers, Gary Sheffield, Carlos Guillen, Pudge Rodriguez and Magglio Ordonez nearing the ends of their careers. I have no problem giving up Gorkys as he’s a center and Granderson has that spot locked up. But Jurrjens looked GOOD last year. He could have stepped into a starting role if necessary. I guess they’re gonna roll with the Gambler again next season but I’m not sure he makes it through another full season. If only HGH wasn’t banned…

Renteria’s solid overall but he struggled in Boston during his only stint in the AL. So that concerns me a bit. I’d prefer moving Inge to short and going after A-Rod for third. Sure it’s gonna cost a ton of money, but it’s Mike Illitch’s money. Then you’d have:

1st - Guillen
2nd - Polly
SS - Inge
3rd - A-Rod

Not too many holes there. Guillen ain’t the best fielder and Inge struggled at the plate last year. But it’d be passable. There are some solid bats in that lineup.

Instead the Tigers added yet another part from Florida’s World Series team. There’s no question it’s much cheaper than adding A-Rod, but that Marlins team won a title 10 years ago. If the Tigers sign A-Rod then I guess it’s all good so long as the Gambler’s elbow is about as reliable as Hasek’s groin last year. If not I’m not sure the Tigers can hit their way to a pennant or World Series. Offense wasn’t the problem last season and it was pitching that won them the pennant the previous season.

[…] The Wolverines aren’t going to have the highest average goal total per game as they did last year, but that doesn’t concern me in the slightest. I do like the fact they’ve only given up more than 3 goals once and that in conference play they are allowing just under two goals per game. They haven’t faced the heavy hitters yet in MSU, Miami and Notre Dame. But they are playing the way they need to play so we’ll see how that plays out as the season progresses. Detroit Tigers I mentioned earlier that I wasn’t thrilled with the decision to give up two high-end prospects for Edgar Renteria. However I’m very happy that Kenny Rogers decided to pull a Mathieu Schneider and test the free agent waters. I hope someone is willing to overpay for him [cough New York Yankees cough]. There are reports the team is pursuing Dontrelle Willis in the event that the Gambler doesn’t come back. I’d take Willis over Rogers in a heartbeat but I’m concerned that the Marlin has pitched over 200 innings on average over the past 5 seasons. Given how much Dave Dombrowski has parted with in trades thus far I don’t even want to think of what he’d give up to get Willis. […]

[…] I wasn’t impressed at all with the trade for Edgar Renteria but I REALLY like the trade for the D-Train and Miguel Cabrera. The lineup is going to be sick and should be able to compete with and beat just about anyone - including the BoSox. […]
