A quick look at the recent road trip

There’s nothing to complain about after the Red Wings completed a romp through western Canada. Here’s how the main contributors by TOI performed at even-strength.

Thoughts:

-The return of Mikael Samuelsson has coincided with the second line becoming a scoring line. Since returning for the game in Phoenix he’s been on the ice for 7 even-strength goals for and only 1 even-strength goal against. He’s had direct contributions as well, scoring 1 goal and notching 4 assists over that time frame.

-Samuelsson and Brian Rafalski had the highest plus/minus rating amongst the skaters due to being on the ice for three even-strength goals during the trip. Datsyuk, Filppula and Nick Lidstrom were the other skaters on the ice for as many even-strength goals.

-Brett Lebda and Chris Chelios seemed to struggle a bit. Lebda moved up to playing on the second pairing and went -1. Cheli, working with a new defensive partner in Derek Meech also went -1. Although the one even-strength goal while Chelios was on the ice his defensive partner was some schlub named Nick Lidstrom.

-The second line, which struggled during the first road trip, made significant contributions during this trip. Even better, two of their goals ended up being game-winners.

I’ll take a look at the second power play unit next. Christy over at Behind the Jersey has a recap on the first month of the Red Wings season so be sure to stop by and check that out.
