Wings-Stars

Yesterday they were in Minnesota. Today they are Cowboys. Tomorrow they’ll have Canadian accents with a southern drawl.

The preview for the game can be found at the official Red Wings website. NHL.com has a good article on Niklas Kronwall. I wrote a little bit about Kronner’s breakout season in this post.

I just read over at Red Wings Central that Darren Helm is being called up and there has been some speculation on who might be injured or out of the lineup. Griffins Central indicates that both Helm and Jimmy Howard have been recalled to Detroit. Howard will obviously back up Chris Osgood with Dom Hasek being out with a sore back. Tomas Holmstrom has a sore groin so my guess is Helm will dress in his place. Hopefully he gets some ice time.

Bruce over at Red Wings Corner is always good about posting updates from practice so he will hopefully have some information later on this morning. There has been a lot of talk about another outdoor hockey game next season. It’s been a huge success every time a game has been played outdoors so it’s something the NHL should obviously continue to do. Some baseball “purists” are getting their panties in a bunch about the fact the proposed hockey game - which could take place at Yankee stadium - would be the final sporting event to close out the legendary stadium before the Bronx Bombers move to their new digs.

Yes, the hallowed grounds where Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Jason Giambi played is clearly sacrosanct. Whatever. I’d actually prefer to see a Wings-Hawks game inside Soldier Field, a sports facility that has routinely hosted a wide variety of sporting events over the years. It probably wouldn’t have as large of an attendance as the game in Buffalo this season but it could probably hold close to 70,000 fans with seating added on the field.

Fortunately the Yankees don’t seem to have the issues the blowhard baseball fans seem to harbor. So that could mean there won’t be any real obstacles to a game being held there. While I’d prefer to have the game in Chicago so I could easily go to the game, I understand that having the Blueshirts host a once-in-a-lifetime game in an iconic sports venue like Yankee stadium would generate much more interest and better ratings.

[…] I originally thought a game in Chicago would take place at Soldier Field. Wrigley would be excellent though. Given some baseball purists have whined about having an NHL contest close out the venerable house that Ruth built, playing the contest at Wrigley would likely make the most amount of sense. But we are talking about Gary Bettman here so odds are good he’ll find a way to screw this up. Chicago Blackhawks Red Wings wrigley field […]
