Wings can reduce Magic Number to 1 with Win Tonight
San Jose won last night so they remain 6 points behind the Red Wings. Detroit, with 51 wins, would be a lock to win the President’s trophy and finish as the #1 seed with any combination of two wins or 2 San Jose losses.
Darren McCarty will play for the Red Wings tonight so it should be a pretty festive atmosphere at the Joe. Matt over at On the Wings always does a great job with gameday updates so I’m sure he’ll have all of the latest news on who’s playing and who’s sitting this game out.
The Blues fans have been chirping quite a bit about Aaron Downey, ridiculing his unwillingness to drop the gloves while Detroit was nursing a 2-1 lead the other night. I for one am glad Downey has a better understanding of the game than that. If Blues fans want to claim that as some kind of victory let ‘em have it, although it’s got to be cold comfort realizing they are spending yet another seaon out of the playoff mix.
I really thought the Blues would turn the corner this season in the Central Division preview a bunch of us worked on, but I was completely wrong. They are still a dreadful team and they have to be questioning that contract Paul Kariya signed the previous offseason. But speaking of the Central Division preview, we had at least one blogger for every team BUT St. Louis participate. Bethany, who is a Columbus fan, wrote the preview for St. Louis.
I’m also keeping an eye on the team’s Detroit could face in the first round. Here are some random thoughts.
Nashville - This would be a good matchup. They have goaltending issues and travel wouldn’t be bad at all.
Colorado - Could help to throw another log onto a dormant rivalry. Wings have owned them all season long.
Edmtonton - I know Bill over at A2Y was concerned about them but I wouldn’t be overly concerned as they obviously don’t have Pronger, who was the guy who made them highly competitive. Roli could stand on his head but he hasn’t been unbelievable or anything this season. And who knows how Garon would deal with playoff hockey. Travel would be a bitch tho.
Vancouver - The Nucks have been decimated by injury. Facing Luongo isn’t something I’d really relish but if you have to at least you’d face the prospect of a team in front of him that has been gutted by injuries. Not something you obviously hope for [injuries yay] but that’s where things stand right now. Travel once again would be a bitch.
Calgary - This is the team I’d least like to play. Not because I don’t think the Wings could beat them and knock them out two years in a row, just mostly due to the fact the Flames are going to physically exact their pound of flesh in the process. Remember noodles? Remember Iggy hitting Schneider with the butt end of his stick? Plus travel would be a bitch.

Hooray for the Western Conference, where almost any playoff matchup can include “travel would be a bitch” as a con.
As Bill would put it, Thanks Gary. Ass.
[…] Last night’s NHL action might have provided the results that more or less guarantee Detroit plays Nashville in the first round of the playoffs. They were the team I said I’d like to face the most given their goaltending issues - the previously unbeatable Dan Ellis finally cooled off and gave up 3 goals on 7 shots last night. […]
