As if 8 Games weren’t enough

Last night’s NHL action might have provided the results that more or less guarantee Detroit plays Nashville in the first round of the playoffs. They were the team I said I’d like to face the most given their goaltending issues - the previously unbeatable Dan Ellis finally cooled off and gave up 3 goals on 7 shots last night.

The short travel would be another benefit. Heck the Red Wings would have an Eastern Conference-like short flight to Nashville for road games in the first round. The fact the Wings haven’t torn up the Central the way they have the Northwest and the Pacific [a combined 5 regulation losses in games against foes from those conferences] would also help to ensure the team gives the Preds their full attention.

Win or gain a point in tonight’s game against the Hawks and the Wings will wrap up the President’s trophy. That’s the key right now. Do that and they assure themselves first place and the Sharks second place. The team is also on pace to win the Jennings trophy for lowest goal against average in the NHL. They would have likely had the award locked up by now if not for the brutal month of February where most of their top 5 on defense were on the IR at some point during the month.
