Grandy should help right the ‘Gers

With reports that Curtis Granderson will be back sometime after this weekend it looks like the Tigers are poised to finally start playing competitive baseball. It couldn’t come any sooner as the team is currently in the basement of the American League but has gone 6-4 over their past 10 games.

Having Granderson in center and - more importantly - leading off the batting order is likely going to be the straw that gets the Tigers offense on track. The Tigers have the worst ERA in MLB and there aren’t any quick fix options as far as starting pitching goes. But the offense, which ranks in the middle of the pack in RBIs, stands to benefit from having Granderson back in the lineup.

The team also only has 10 stolen bases, which will likely improve with Grandy in the lineup. Clete Thomas has done okay as far as batting average and getting on base while at the top of the order but he’s not getting extra base hits, he’s not stealing any bases, and he’s not scoring any runs [two runs scored all season]. Jim Leyland has tried Pudge at the top of the order and he’s been ineffective as well. Granderson is going to hopefully provide Detroit with much more production at the top of the batting order.

And on top of all that he’s probably the true leader of this ballclub. Many people would pick Justin Verlander as the face of the franchise but I think Granderson is much more important due to the fact he’s an everyday player, a sensational fielder, and has been a very good leadoff hitter for Detroit.

The Tigers have started to show signs of life over the past 10 games. I think they have a good chance to work their way up from the basement now that they are about to get Granderson back from the DL.

[…] So I expected the Tigers offense to start cooking with kerosene when Curtis Granderson was activated but I didn’t expect it to happen quite this quickly! Jim Leyland also said he’d juggle his infield, putting Miguel Cabrera at first and Carlos Guillen at third. It didn’t happen tonight as Guillen stayed at first and Caberea was the DH, but the Tigers nonetheless rocked Texas on Granderson’s return. […]
