Wings-Hawks at Wrigley?

I saw this article linked over at Kuklas Korner. Supposedly the NHL would have to foot a $200,000 maintenance bill if they want to stage a game at Yankee Stadium on January 1, 2009. If I know Gary Bettman and the league’s penny-pincher GMs who seem to drive decision-making for the NHL as well as I think I do [the current stupid schedule is supported largely because it saves certain teams on travel costs], I don’t think there’s any way they’d pay that amount to keep the water on at Yankee Stadium.

I hope I’m right because their fallback option would make it very easy for me to attend the game.

If the league opts not to foot the expense - a decision that will have to come soon - then the Red Wings will face the Blackhawks at Wrigley Field.

I originally thought a game in Chicago would take place at Soldier Field. Wrigley would be excellent though. Given some baseball purists have whined about having an NHL contest close out the venerable house that Ruth built, playing the contest at Wrigley would likely make the most amount of sense. But we are talking about Gary Bettman here so odds are good he’ll find a way to screw this up.

The NHL announced that the Red Wings will play the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field on January 1, 2009. I wrote something on this back when it looked like the game would be played at either Yankee stadium or Wrigley. […]
