3 Stars: Detroit - Colorado series

I did this for round one. Here are the stars as picked by me for round two.

First Star: Johan Franzen

This one was pretty easy. There’s actually a pretty funny poll over at Red Wings Central. The Mule broke Gordie Howe’s record for goals in a playoff series by a Red Wing and also set an NHL record for most goals in a 4-game NHL playoff series. Three game-winning goals, two hat tricks, what more is there to say about Franzenstein’s performance in this series?

Second Star: Henrik Zetterberg

If not for Mule’s heroics Z’s sensational play would have likely been the story in this series. He scored 5 goals, including the game-winner in Game 3. But just as impressive is the fact the Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom line was only on the ice for one goal against. That was in Game 1 when Milan Hejduk scored to draw the Avalanche to within one goal at 4-3. Zetterberg averaged nearly 22 minutes a game in the first three games before the Game 4 blowout and played in all situations. Lowetide has a nice post about what was expected from Hank as a prospect back in the day. As it stands right now he’s one of the top 5 forwards in the game and is playing so far above his contract number it’s just utterly ridiculous.

Third Star: Nicklas Lidstrom

Nik Kronwall has been having a breakout campaign in these playoffs, but that doesn’t mean Norris Nick hasn’t been a huge positive presence for the Wings. The captain was on the ice for only one even-strength goal against [in the first game], while he led all Detroit blueliners in offensive production with an average of a point a game in this series.
