9 is Enough

There’s always been something that’s stood between the Red Wings and a 10 game winning streak. Tonight it was a desperate Dallas Stars team that did the things it hadn’t done all series. As a result the series will head back to the Joe where the Red Wings will try to clinch the Western Conference championship on home ice.

On to the questions for this series.

5. Will Marty Turco alter the storyline of his career against the Red Wings?

The Dallas netminder had his first really solid game in the series. Detroit had one goal waived off early on when goaltender interference was called on Tomas Holmstrom. With that being said Turco stopped 34 of 35 shots for an impressive .971 SV%. Part of the improved performance was due to his play and part of it was due to the team playing in front of him.

4. Will the Wings be able to contain Brenden Morrow?

The Dallas captain was impressive coming back from what looked like a nasty tumble in Game 3. He potted the insurance goal that gave the Stars a 3-1 lead that would be the final score. He skated for nearly 21 minutes, had 4 hits, 7 takeaways, and was +1 on the night.

3. Will Detroit be able to contain the Stars’ Power Play?

The Red Wings weren’t able to match Dallas’ intensity during the first period and as a result they took a lot of penalties early on. It wasn’t until the third period though, when the Stars finally capitalized on the man advantage. Detroit seemed intent on trying to skate the puck into the zone when they were on the power play. The Stars simply stacked the blueline and forced turnovers again and again and again. On a Brian Rafalski turnover they were able to draw a penalty that led to Mike Modano’s game-winning power play goal. On the night the Stars converted on 25% of their opportunities with the man advantage.

2. Will Detroit be able to put up 3 goals per game against Dallas?

Three goals would have sent this game into overtime. But the Stars deserve credit for their best peformance thus far in the series. Datsyuk’s goal was waived off and Henrik Zetterberg hit a post, but the combination of desperate play from the Stars skaters and a sound performance from Marty Turco held the Wings to one tally on the scoreboard.

1. Will Detroit be able to maintain their win streak?

The Red Wings have had numerous 9-game winning streaks. For some reason they can never hit 10. Tonight all of the credit goes to Dallas for excellent work on the PK and for carrying play for nearly the entire first period. They didn’t have a lead to show for their hard work early on but it eventually paid off for them and pushed the series back to Joe Louis Arena for Game 5.
