Farewell Todd McLellan

Kuklas spread the word [via the Freep] to the hockey world that Red Wings assistant coach Todd McLellan has accepted the head coaching position with the San Jose Sharks. The Mercury News has a good overview of why he was a highly qualified candidate for the job opening.

McLellan, 40, has been an assistant to Babcock for the past three seasons. Before that, McLellan was coach of the Houston Aeros and led that American Hockey League team to the Calder Cup title in 2003.

The Red Wings had the NHL’s top power play in McLellan’s first season, and the second best over his three-year tenure at 20.1 percent.

It always sucks to lose guys who are successful, but the biggest thing I’ll miss about McLellan? It’s the fact I think he looks like Dr. Nick Riviera from the Simpsons. Check it out:

Hey everybody!

Oh well, it could be worse: Adrian Dater was pushing for the Avs to try and hire McLellan. That would have really sucked. Fortunately the Avs’ “braintrust” went with Cami Granato instead.
