More draft day information
Bruce MacLeod had a chance to discuss tonight’s draft with the Red Wings brass and it looks like all those suggestions Detroit could draft a goalie in round one are misguided. He indicates the Red Wings are hoping to get a forward or defensemen they have ranked amongst their top 10 players in the draft.
If that’s not the case, there’s always the chance the Red Wings could trade down in order to turn that first rounder into two later picks.
“When you pick where we are, sometimes one of our strategies might be if there’s nothing really jumping out at us, we’ll look at moving down and try to get two of those players that are sitting there,” said Nill. “It’s like rolling the dice. You get one more roll of the dice. Saying that, you need a dance partner too.”
That’s what Detroit did during the 2006 draft where they ended up with three second round picks. They don’t have a second rounder in this year’s draft but given the fact the draft is seen as having very good depth the Wings might be able to acquire a 2nd and a 3rd round pick for the 30th overall pick.
